Polar cosolvents including methanol, ethanol, ethyl ether and other polar may enhance lutein extraction efficiency (Yen et al., 2012). Macias-Sanchez et al. (2010) also showed that the extracts from Scenedesmus almeriensis by SFE had h low lutein but high b-carotene (less polar). Combined method in Ruen-Ngam et al. (2012) with organic solvent eluent pretreatment has a good performance (53% lutein recovery and 43% selectivity with lutein content of 7.9 g/kg dry weight in Chlorella vulgaris). Application of supercritical fluid extraction technique in lutein extraction may be a promising extraction over the organic extraction technique from microalgae.
