At the end of the 80-day feeding period, four fish were randomly
taken from each tank (12 fish/treatment), anesthetized with MS 222
(60 mg/L) and killed by a sharp blow to the head prior to dissection.
The entire intestine tract was removed aseptically, wrapped in aluminum
foil and immediately frozen on liquid nitrogen prior to storage at
(Supplemental Fig. 1)80 °C. The intestines were then gently thawed
on dry ice and then, divided into MI and DI as previously described by
Krogdahl et al. (2003). Digesta samples from those two intestinesections were collected by carefully scraping with a sterile spatula into
sterile containers. The samples were stored on dry ice until transfer to
−80 °C were they were kept until DNA extraction.
