In Australia the"North Coast Healthy Lifestyle Programme" was set up in 1978 to test over two years the effects of the media alone and media plus community programmes on life style. The programme was funded jointly by the NSW Health Department and the Commonwealth Department of Health. As at Stanford, a three town quasi-experimental design was chosen. The stated
aims of the study were (a)to decrease the prevalence of smoking, (b) to increase participation in physical activity, and (c) to reduce the consumption of dietary fat.We reporttheresults in respect of objective (a), the antismoking component ofthe healthy lifestyle programme, called the "Quit for Life" campaign.
