The present work describes the conditions for pigments production by M. purpureus in submerged cultures using an agro-industrial waste. The conditions established for pigment production by M. purpureus were using 20–22.5 g/l of peptone and grape waste as carbon source from 5 to 30 g/l, resulting in UA500 of 5.0. The addition of MSG resulted in an important increase of pigment yield. Waste of wine industry, which is highly available in Southern Brazil, is a potential alternative source for pigment production by M. purpureus.
