A design dose curve for chemical phosphorus removal using aluminum ions was
22 developed using literature and pilot-plant data (Figure 8.2). The literature data includes
23 laboratory-scale test data and data from sites that are operating with chemical phosphorus

1 removal (Gates et al., 1990). The full data set includes results for a range of pH values (mostly
2 6.5 to 7.5), temperatures, and wastewater characteristics. The effluent soluble phosphorus
3 concentration is labeled “residual soluble P” on the logarithmic x-axis. The molar ratio for metal
4 ion dose to soluble phosphorus removed is labeled “M dose/soluble P removed (mol/mol)” on the y-
5 axis. Note that the curves apply to the soluble portion of the phosphorus only.
