K-W-L is an effective strategy for English
Language Learners (ELLs) that combines
before reading, during reading, and after
reading activities.
K = know: What they know about the
topic of the text they will be reading.
W = want to know: Students think of
questions about the topic that they want
or need to know.
L = learned: Students list what they have
learned.
