In China, rice accounted for 27% of total area form grain crops
and 36% of total grain production in 2008 (MAPRC, 2008). In
2001, 93% of the 28.6 million hectares (ha) of rice production area
in China was cultivated under irrigated lowland conditions (World
Rice Statistics, 2003). As cities draw on too many water resources
for their rapidly growing populations, available water for irrigation
is becoming increasingly scarce (Li, 2001). Thus, irrigation water
use efficiency and productivity must be significantly improved
for rice cultivation.
