Psychoanalytic theory has influenced most of the other models of group work presented in this textbook.
Some of these other approaches are extensions of the analytic model, some are modifications of analytic concepts and procedures, and some have emerged as a reaction against psychoanalysis.
It is fair to say that most theories of group counseling have borrowed concepts and techniques from psychoanalysis. As a group counselor, you may have neither the training nor the motivation to conduct analytic groups. However, even if you do not use psychoanalytic techniques, some basic psychoanalytic concepts can become an integral part of your own theoretical approach.
