Impact of HIV infection
Thirty-one patients were HIV positive; 46 tested negative, and in
the remaining 18, the HIV status was not known (declined testing
after counselling). The demographic data and outcome measures
were similar in HIV-infected and non-infected groups (Table 6).
CD4 counts were < 200 cells/ml in three patients and all three
patients and their babies showed no clinical evidence of infection.
The mean CD4 count was 463 cells/ml (range 79−1 419).
