hazardous practices through statistical tests. There were large disparities in pesticide hazard awareness and practices across states, but overall, unsafe practices were common. In West Bengal, for instance, 83% reported that they stored pesticides in their houses, although all respondents reported that pesticides were stored away from food and in a safe place not accessible to children. For the complete sample, there was a highly significant association between the level of farmers' education and how farmers store pesticide (p=0.000). This indicates that the level of education significantly
influenced the place of storage: those who had only primary education (or less) mainly stored pesticides in the house rather than placing them in the farm shed, which was the preferred choice of those who had higher education.
