In Nyāya, ātman is eternal , as in other orthodox doctrines.
Ātman has no beginning, and no end; it is always constant.
But there is another element of self besides ātman. That is manas, which means the distinctive characteristics of any individual being.
Manas in turn gives rise to love, hate, pleasure, pain, and desire. Additionally, dharma (morality) and adharma (immorality) are considered qualities of the self. In total, then, the individual self is composed of these eight elemental qualities.
