Lesson ADT 126
Task: Identify possessions of others.
Prerequisites: ADT 1, ADT 4, ADT 5
Concept: The concept of sharing and respect for others begins with the understanding that other people have possessions of their own. Beyond basic discrimination skills, this activity enters into the concept of "theory of mind,” which basically is a developmental milestone wherein the student understands that there are other people with different experiences existing in the world at the same time. Frequently this ability does not occur until the student reaches a mental age of 4 years. The instructor the refine should understand that for some students this is not a realistic goal, even if the prerequisite skills arc present.
Behavioral Objective: When requested, "(Name), show me 1point col (name of another student or peer), (item such as a toy)," the student will point to that item and then point to a similar item and identify so his or her own to a 9096 accuracy level for 20 consecutive trials.
Materials: Personal items of the student (preferably items the student likes or enjoys) and similar items that belong to another student or peer.
Task Analysis:
1. Review with the student the ability to point to objects (see prerequisite ADT 4) by having him or her point to named items of his or her own.
2. Modify Step 1 by replacing the student's personal items with those of the other person.
3. Combine items that are both the student's .d the other person's and ask the student to point to items that are his or hers as well as those of the other person.
4. Although success toward the objective can be made by mastery of Step 3, learning can be made stronger by adding items from other students, parents, or peers.
