protection (Griffiths et al, 2004). Various methods have
been used for determining NG feeding tube position, most
commonly aspiration of gastric aspirate and X-ray (Metheny
and Meert, 2004; National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA),
2011). The most recognised bedside test is pH testing of
gastric aspirate, with X-ray being the gold standard test if
aspiration proves inconclusive (NPSA, 2005a; 2005b; 2011).
Guidance from the NPSA (2011) advises that registered
nurses involved in confirming NG feeding tube position
have received sufficient training to be deemed competent.
