In a number of cases, external costs appear lower for
wine relative to beer and spirits, but the differences are relatively small in most cases. Srivastava
and Zhao suggest that econometric studies, which can correct for the effects of demographic and
socioeconomic factors on consumption and of health links to consumption of different beverages,
are required before strong conclusions can be drawn on the differences in external costs by alcoholic
beverage.
