The same formalism in the representation of both Needs and Requirements on
the one hand, and the traditional (FBS) design variables on the other hand, is
an essential element to map and investigate the product design tasks from the
earliest phases of situational analysis and problem setting with the descriptive
aim of better comprehension of the design processes. The proposed additions
to the FBS model meet the need for suitable models that utilise a homogeneous formalism for the entire process, which is essential to build value-oriented product development techniques. With respect to the typical practical applications of the FBS framework, e.g., the investigation of the cognitive processes through the study of design protocols, the capability to include in the loop the representation of needs and requirements actually enables the integrated study of methods and techniques for Needs Identification with complementary approaches and tools for requirements formulation and design embodiment.
