In vitro and in vivo results demonstrate the effectiveness of vapors of clove and/or mustard essential oils, against B. cinerea. The inhibitory ac- tivity exhibited by vapors of evaluated essential oils can be attributed to the major compounds identified in tested essential oils of clove and mustard (eugenol and allyl isothiocyanate, respectively), halting the de- velopment of B. cinerea in both in vitro and in vivo tests. Furthermore, FICIndex demonstrated that combinations of clove and mustard essential oils had a synergistic antifungal effect, thus confirming that the com- bined use of volatile compounds from essential oils of herbs and spices is more effective than its individual application. Tested essential oils contain highly volatile organic compounds with strong inhibitory ef- fects, so that they could be considered a good alternative to traditional synthetic antimicrobials.
