Generic kanban System (GKS) was provided in 1994 by Chang
and Yih (1994a). GKS was created due to the necessity of a just-intime
system for non-repetitive productive environments. The
difference in GKS, and the reason for its name, is related to using
generic signals, which do not belong to a certain part, and thus
can be attributed to any item in a workstation. This system
requires a waiting time since there is no intermediary WIP
between workstations. There are signals that if removed do not
initiate the production of new parts automatically, instead they
wait for a new requirement. The GKS behaves like a push system,
but it is more flexible and robust as to the location of the
bottleneck. Simulation results showed that the GKS is better than
the kanban system in dynamic environments. Chang and Yih
(1994a, 1994b, 1998) give more information about this system.
