Each journal was searched in Web of Science to discover the number of unique articles cited in 2007 and 2008, as well as the total number of citations received in 2007 and 2008. Six authors were randomly chosen from each journal for the period 2007-2008, and those names were searched in Web of Science to determine both the number of unique articles cited and the number of citations received for the period 2007-2008. For comparison purposes, the same information was gathered from Google Scholar using the Publish or Perish search interface; duplicate entries were eliminated to determine the number of unique articles. Likewise, the editors of each journal, along with enough randomly selected editorial board members to bring the total to six for each journal, were searched in both Web of Science and Google Scholar for the same information as the authors. Finally, all articles from 2007 and 2008 were examined for journal self-citations (reference to other articles appearing in the same journal), and these were compared to the overall number of references in articles from the period in order to compute the self-citation rate of each journal for 2007-2008.
