4.3 Bereavement and caregiver stress
Bereavement, a frequently experienced and highly stressful event in later life may be complicated by episodes of major depression. Losing a loved one may also be preceded by strenuous and extended care giving. Bereavement and stressful care giving both have the potential to increase mortality and initiate or exacerbate depression.
