Cytochrome c is released from mitochondrial intermembrane
space following cerebral ischemia (Fujimura et al., 1998)
along with other apoptogenic proteins such as caspase-9
(Krajewski et al., 1999), which is involved in the formation of
apoptosome with apoptotic protease-activating factor 1
(Apaf1) and procaspase-9 in the presence of ATP.
