The Great Peace had been established between Five Nations- the Mohawk, the Oneida, Then Onondaga, the Cayuga, and the Seneca. One day, some young men in the Seneca village had decided to visit the Onondaga people. After seven days passed the young men hadn't return. The village started to worry and had sent another group of young men to search and discover what happened to the others. Another seven days passed and none of the young men had return to the village. This worried the village people about the dangers in the forest.
The old chief of the village thought long and hard. The wise women gave him good advice. "We should find someone brave enough to face whatever danger is out there."
The old chief had seen that all the other young men besides one were laughing a him. The old chief had silenced the other young men and offered the wampum to Swift Runner. Swift Runner took it without hesitating. He had accepted it, he was right to be the one to face the danger.
Swift Runner went home to his grandmother's lodge, where she was waiting for him. His grandmother already knew what he had done. She had told him, "The village may not remember but, your father was a great warrior. Our family is a family that has power." His grandmother had given him a heavy bow. She said, "If you can string this bow, then you are ready to face whatever waits for you on the trail."
The next morning, his grandmother had given him is grandfather's cap along with four pairs of moccasins, a small pouch with cornmeal mixed with maple sugar, and the last thing she gave him was advice. her advice was "Pay close attention to your little dog. You have treated him well and so he is you great friend. He is small but his eyes and nose are
keen
. Keep him always in front of you. He will warn you of any danger before it can strike you."
Swift Runner had set out with his little dog in front of him. It had seem to him that someone was following them among the trees. Yet, he couldn't see anything in the thick brush. The trail curved toward the left, and he felt even more the presence of something watching. Suddenly his little dog ran into the brush at the side of the trail, barking loudly. Then out of the forest came a Nyagwahe, a monster bear. Its great teeth were as long as a man's arm. It was twice as tall as a moose. Swift Runner had learned what to speak to the bear when it attacks, words that terrify who hear them. He had spoken to the bear, "I see you, I am after. You cannot escape me." He then shouted again "You cannot escape me" with that said he ran after the bear who had fled from him. Day after day in the forest Swift Runner would
pursue
the bear. He wouldn't stop until he had captured the bear and freed his ancestors.
In the End
After the years of Swift Runner in the forest, he had grown to a strong man. He learned how to live on his own in the forest and freed his ancestors. He discovered how to defeat the bear and proved he was brave just like his ancestors When he returned to the village all the young men that were teasing him learned their lesson not to judge anyone on how they look. Swift Runner was happy to return to the village back to his grandmother. He was one happy man living with his grandmother.
At first when I had read this story I couldn't understand what the story was explaining. Then I thought long and hard. When I reread the story, I realized the story was explaining how Swift Runner was brave enough to go and face whatever danger awaited him. I also realized that those young men who teased Swift Runner realized that it wasn't good to judge people by how they look. They realized that Swift Runner was brave, strong, active, and clearheaded.
Just be sure to remember...
Just because someone looks weak and lazy, don't assume that they are. That person is capable of many more things.
