The abundance of a major predator, the sea star (Asterias vulgaris),
at this particular site could have played a role in the survival of seeded scallops.
Indeed, the greatest sea star densities were found at the Baie des Chaleurs site
(80% Asterias vulgaris), while densities at the other two sites, Miramichi and
Détroit, were much lower (Table 1). It has become necessary to find a way to
reduce sea star densities to ensure the profitability of these scallop enterprises,
particularly at the Baie des Chaleurs site.
