Magnetism from electricity WITH THE OF VOLTA's BATTERY IN 1800, scientists had a DEVELOPMENT current. This opened up source flowing electric Hans new fields of research. Twenty years later an observation by Christian Oersted Copenhagen began to linn(1777-185 om two great scientific mysteries of the age ctricity an a current magnetism. Oersted noticed that a meta wire brought near to it. affected a magnetic compass needle that was his revelation, which contradicted orthodox philosophy of the time, was published in s journals. French scientific thinker André-Marie Ampere(1775-1836) heard about Oersted's work from a fellow scientist. He doubted it at first, so he repeated the tests, but had similar results. Ampere therefore set to work to describe the effect more fully and to explain the connection between electricity and magnetism In repeating the experiments, he provided a theoretical and mathematical description of the practical results of Oersted's work. From this flowed discoveries, such as the electromagnet(pp. 26-27) and the telegraph receiver pp. 56-57)
