Solo Travel Means…
One of my happiest moments traveling was in the cafeteria on the Navimag ferry going to Patagonia. I sat back, observed the scene and felt completely and totally happy with where I was (Patagonia solo!) and the energy around me.
One of my more challenging times was navigating my way by car through New York City at night on route to Cape Cod. Time was against me but I made it, though I admit I was happy and relieved to find my hotel at 2am.
Last week, I was in London. The tube is an excellent way to get around but at first it is a challenge to figure out. Then, on the morning of day two, I felt exhilarated as I worked it like a Londoner.
Admittedly, these are small moments. But what are we but the accumulation of small moments. These, and others as I travel solo, contribute to my sense of being capable and build my self-confidence.
But when I asked the Solo Travel Society on Facebook what solo travel means to them, they said something different. Not one mentioned confidence. The closest to it was “empowerment”. The overwhelming response was “Freedom”. The freedom to live life and travel when, where and how one wants.
I’ll concede that solo travel does mean freedom and I really like — no, I really need this freedom. But it is when I experience a new level of confidence that I’m most thrilled to be traveling solo. This is why, for me, solo travel means confidence.
