Perceptions of Mangrove Benefits
The mean perception ratings for regulating services were
higher compared with other types of services (rated medium to
high, 2.9–3.4; Table 3). This was in contrast to the results
reported by Dahdouh-Guebas et al. (2000), which found higher
perceived benefits for mangrove as a provisioning service. In
the case of PPN Bay, the fishers were aware of erosion and
considered it to be a greater issue (Thampanya et al., 2006), so
they have a higher perception of the protection provided by
mangroves against this threat. Among the provisioning
services, provision of fishery resources was rated higher
(medium, 3.0) than other types of services (very low, 0.4–0.9).
This was expected because the target respondent was fishers.
The cultural and supporting services were rated very low to
medium (1.0–3.1)
The ordinal regression models investigated differences in
perception of mangrove benefits (Table 3) on the basis of the
variables and baseline categories shown in Table 2. In the case
of village, the table shows whether differences were significant
between any of the three villages. Mean perception scores for
the three villages are also included in Table 3.
