SINCE THE 1940s, it has been accepted that fluoride can decrease cavities; and its use has been part of a major public health care initiative to decrease caries. Research has shown that brushing with toothpaste that contains fluoride lowers the risk of decay by 15% to
30%; and drinking fluoridated water lowers the risk by 18% to 40%.
