mosques are buildings used for worship by muslims, people who follow the faith of islam. some mosques are simple halls. cathedral mosques, or friday mosques, are large, beautiful buildings that can hold all the adults in the community.
many mosques have a conurtyard surrounded by four halls. usually the courtyard has a fountain or well for washing. often, the walls are decorated with verses from the quran, the holy book of the muslims. the inner wall closest to the holy city of mecca has an arch called amihrab. muslims face mecca when they pray.
most mosques have towers called minarets. from there, muezzins or criers, call the people to prayer.
