“The Mad Prince of British Fashion” is what the Sunday Times of London called Gareth Pugh, whose wicked creations had the fashion world delightfully ashiver, in 2007.[1] Models stalking his catwalk in those days could expect to leave their pretty looks at the door, as the dancer turned club kid turned designer transformed them into giant black poodles with perky ears (molded from inflated condoms), or Elizabethan Stormtroopers, or latex-masked harlequins equipped with flotation-device sleeves. Each of his early productions was more like a carnival than a fashion show. The intention was sensation—not to actually sell clothes.
