Whitney thinks that Jim is a good jokester and a good man. However, there are several reasons why we should not believe Whitney and his understanding of the situation.
To begin with, Jim’s jokes are not funny; his jokes are mean with the purpose to make fun of the way people look, to take advantage and to humiliate others. In short his jokes have the purpose to hurt others and make Jim feel powerful. For example, Jim tells Whitney not to shave Fred, “anything is better than his ugly face” – In this way, Jim made fun of Fred’s ugly face but no one laughed, However, Whitney thought it was a good joke.
