Research was conducted in southern Italy near Naples (40°42'N, 26°56'E), on a
volcanic sandy-loam soil (coarse sand 28%, fine sand 48%, silt 9%, clay 15%, organic
matter 2%, pH 7.6), characterised by high fertility and low-medium water retention,
with low bulk density (1.1 g cm 3) due to a high pumice content.
On 18 June 1993 (DAT 0), bulbs (6 cm in diameter) of cv. 'Casablanca' (Lilium
spp.) were transplanted at a spacing of 25 plants m 2; rows were 0.6 m apart and
east-west oriented.
