This study evaluated soil properties and soil quality under various
land cover types and investigated on their interrelationships within
shifting agricultural systems in South Cameroon using multiple
statistic tests, computation of SQI and principalcomponent analysis.
Soil quality changes fromone land cover type to another. Soils under
forested land cover types and bare soil with burned vegetation
biomass showed the highest content of OM. The best soils as
compared to the primary forest (FC) and as function of soil quality
index were found under bare soils with burned and unburned
vegetation biomass (FR1, FR), Gilbertiodendron dewevrei forest (FG),
and raffia and Uapaca forest (RA). On the contrary, those under C.
odorata (JC),bush ligneous fallows (JR),andsecondary forest (SF) are
of mediocre quality. The soil quality indicators controlling soil
quality on field study are: organic matter (OM), available
phosphorus (P), calcium (Ca) and pHw. The soil quality appeared
to be highly influenced by ashes from burned vegetation biomass
which temporally enriches soils with nutrient elements and by the
organic matter supplied by forested land cover types.
