The history of England and the English language begins from around AD 450, when Germanic people from the mainland of Europe began to settle in Britain. These people are usually referred to as the Anglo-Saxons or Angles, although they were probably not all angles or Saxons. They established kingdoms over most of what is now England and, while there is evidence that Celts may have continued to live in pockets of territory in England, Celtic Britain was henceforth reduced to western and northern parts of the island.
