A taboo operates to suppress or inhibit certain behavior, thought, or in this case, speech. Different cultures, in order to preserve social order, use taboos to control individuals within the groups. The power of the taboo or the strength of the taboo is relative to the power of the controlling group to sanction or punish the perpetrator. The larger the threat, the greater the inhibition of the language. The function of taboo is to prohibit the behavior of speaker and preserve social cohesion. The focus is on the speaker’s behavior.”
