It is not the purpose of this article to advocate the supremacy of one of these schools of thought over the other. Rather it is important to recognize the complex interaction of all factors in terms of shaping or influencing organizations. The research into national cultures demonstrates that cultural values and attitudes do vary between societies and that these lead to different work-related values and attitudes. In turn, groups from different cultures will "behave differently under similar circumstances because of the differences in their underlying values and attitudes". Hofstede, whose research into international differences in work-related values is the most widely known and cited, identifies four significant dimensions to measure cultural differences which correlate with nationality. These are power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism and masculinity
