Sergeant Baker hadn't arrived yet but there was a note
from him on my desk. He'd telephoned the hospital and
Mrs Morton's doctor. Both doctors said that her injuries
were not the result of falling downstairs. Her own doctor
thought that her husband had probably beaten her. I didn't
agree with that theory. I remembered the dark red marks on
both her wrists.
I looked at my watch. it was only eight o'clock. l phoned
Hounslow police station. I told them the address of Frank
Morton 's garage and they said they would investigate it.
I told them to hurry because I wanted to visit Mrs Morton
again as soon as possible after nine o'clock.
