Dressings and drain use
It has been shown that pressure dressings do not prevent postoperative hematoma, and may obscure visualization of a hematoma (40). Several randomized prospective studies have shown that the use of a drain after uncomplicated total thyroidectomy, lobectomy, and subtotal thyroidectomy likewise does not reduce the rate of postoperative bleeding (41–44). For this reason, most patients undergoing ambulatory thyroidectomy do not have drains placed. Nursing and discharging staff should be educated on the importance of being certain that the incision is flat before discharge
