The door of hell would be near the village of Derweze, in the middle of the Karakum desert in Turkmenistan. About 80 percent of the area of Turkmenistan is desert, a hostile environment and not easy to visit because of the hot sand, the salt deposits, enormous quantities of natural gas and the lack of drinking water. Nevertheless, every year hundreds of tourists flock to the area to see what the locals call the “Gates of hell”.
