Most victims of trafficking have been lied to and abused so often that they are reluctant to trust anyone. Statistically, both domestic and international trafficking victims are most likely to come from the most vulnerable populations.17 Patients often are hesitant to identify themselves as “trafficking victims,” and many would not even understand the term. It is not uncommon for the victim to decline assistance or even to lash out against anyone striving to help him or her. Clawson and colleagues12 reported that the “power of the trafficker's or pimp's seduction and manipulation, as well as the manifestations of Stockholm syndrome, render some victims less likely to see themselves as victims and more likely to protect their perpetrator at all costs.”
