Then there you go. So stop complaining. You’re dating Lee Min Ho for God’s sake.’
Shin Hye laughed. That’s right. I’m the luckiest girl in the world. She turned to her phone and finally switched it on. She watched as an outrageous number of messages and voice mails flooded in. She skimmed through them, but she only really watched for one name. Aside from the messages he sent before she switched her phone off, there was none from Min Ho. He must have been told not to contact me, too, Shin Hye thought. Her manager hasn’t lifted the don’t-contact-Min Ho policy yet, but she figured that it was okay to do so now, since the agencies have released official statements already. She smiled, thinking of him, and typed.
Min Ho frowned as he read the message again. He had just come back from an interview with a Chinese magazine and only checked his phone now. It’s been an hour since she sent it.
Shin Hye: Oppa, we’re about to board our plane back to Seoul. Good luck on the Gala. I’m sure you’ll do well. I can’t wait to see you when you get back. :)
He took a deep breath and tried to steady himself. His mind was telling him to be happy she finally texted him, but he couldn’t help that the only thing he felt right now was anger. How could she act like nothing has happened? She ignored me for days without a decent explanation. He took another look at the message and tossed his phone on the bed. As he unbuttoned his shirt, he tried to think of an appropriate response. He didn’t want to fake it and act like everything was alright when it wasn’t, but he also felt that this wasn’t the right time to pick a fight over what had transpired over the last few days. He simply had no energy for it.
After he confronted the writer at the lobby three days ago, he went back up to his hotel room and told his staff to leave him alone. Against his better judgment, he dialled Jang Geun Suk’s number.
‘Min Ho-yah,’ Geun Suk answered his phone after just two rings. ‘I’m glad you called. How are you holding up?’
‘You talked to Shin Hye?’ His voice sounded gruff but he didn’t care. He wasn’t in the mood to put up a façade with Geun Suk at the moment.
‘Eo? Yeah,’ Geun Suk sounded a bit thrown off by Min Ho’s tone. ‘Wae?’
‘When?’
‘Uhh, forty-five minutes ago? I tried to call her number but it was out of reach. So I called her brother instead. They were having lunch together so I was able to talk to her.’
Min Ho felt a familiar pang of jealousy. He always envied Geun Suk for knowing Shin Hye longer, and for being close to her family. Min Ho didn’t even know any of their numbers.
‘Are you okay?’ Geun Suk asked.
‘Is she okay?’ Min Ho asked back, his voice faltering.
Geun suk paused. Min Ho figured he must have realized what was going on. ‘Yeah, she’s fine. Don’t worry. They’re leaving their hotel this afternoon and transferring to an inn. Some reporters found out where they were staying,’ he explained. ‘But I heard the hotel and Shin Hye’s Japanese agency staff are helping out.’
Min Ho was having trouble placing how he felt; everything was just a mixed bag of emotions at this point. He was relieved to know that Shin Hye was okay, but as he listened to Geun Suk, his chest felt heavier and heavier. He was still hurt, and he was still angry. She should be telling me these things. She should be talking to me instead.
When Min Ho didn’t reply, Geun Suk spoke again, hesitating slightly. ‘Do you… want me to send you her brother’s number? I’m sure Shin Won hyung won’t mind.’
Min Ho felt even worse at his suggestion. Shin Hye has never felt farther from him than she did now. ‘Anya,’ he replied ineffectually. ‘She’ll probably call me soon, right? Thanks anyway.’
‘Anytime, chingu.’
Min Ho sensed a hint of sympathy in Geun Suk’s voice. He let out a chuckle. ‘Jang Geun Suk. When will it stop being difficult to be us?’ It was a rhetorical question, but Min Ho wanted to hear an answer. Any answer.
After a few seconds of silence, Geun Suk spoke. ‘I don’t know. It probably won’t. That’s why we have to be stronger than most people,’ he said. ‘At least you have someone to be strong for.’
At least you have someone to be strong for, Min Ho recalled. I was wrong. She never called. He changed the rest of his clothes and climbed on the bed. Grabbing his phone, he looked at Shin Hye’s message one last time. He drew out a sigh and closed his eyes. She has to be strong for me, too.
