In the past two decades, China has witnessed a fast
growth in its economy. However, the ever-increasing population
and accelerated urbanization have caused a rise in
the generation of MSW. Currently, about 190 million tonnes
of MSW are produced each year in China, which
accounts for 29% of the world’s MSW (The World Bank,
2005; Dong et al., 2001). Solid waste pollution and its management
are becoming major issues throughout the country;
how to manage these wastes and hopefully recycle
them have been the concern of the municipal governments.
