This finding supports the proposal that torsional compression of B DNA by the terminase motor by a portal-DNA- grip-and-release mechanism helps to drive translocation [88]. Attaching a longer DNA leader to the Y-DNA allows such abnormal structure substrates to be anchored in the procapsid for successful translocation, most likely by multiple motor cycles [89].
