Lesson SOC 3
Task: Take turns.
Prerequisites: SOC 2
Concept: The concept of "turn taking" is the beginning of interactive socialization. Obviously, this task must take place in a group setting. Some form of enjoyable game or activity should be the focus of this exercise. The students will each be given a different color card with a different shape to help with identification of whose turn it is at a given time.
Behavioral Objective: The student will demonstrate the ability to take his or her turn and allow others to take their turns without overt signs of frustration or anxiety to a 90% accuracy level over 20 trials.
Materials: Preferred games or activities that involve one person at a time taking action and two matched sets of color cards of different geometric shapes for each student in the group.
Task Analysis:
1. Verify that the activity(ies) selected in the materials section are in fact enjoyed and desired by the group.
2. Give each student a different color card and prompt each student to hold up the card when his or her name is called.
3. Perform the activity outlined in Step 1, holding up a card that matches one possessed by a student, and ask, "Whose turn is it?" Prompt all students to identify which student has the card being held, then prompt that student to participate in the activity. If other students attempt to participate when it is not their turn, gently redirect them and ask them to wait until it is their turn.
4. Modify Step 3 to using the students' names instead of the cards.
5. Continue Step 4, reducing all physical prompting and guidance until the objective is met.
