Having a large fleet of vessels requires good fuel hedging prac- tices and careful planning. The current rise of crude oil has also shifted more attention to this increasingly important purchase. After all, without fuel the ships would literally just be floating ho- tels without any electricity. Choosing good refueling ports can be a challenge in such global deployment. The company, being a large consumer of fuel, has ventured into the bio-fuel business as an alternative to the increasing price of regular fuel. The pilot project was successful and a strategy of integration was adopted. It is now both the biggest consumer and importer of bio-fuel in North America. They are getting all the storage and distribution assets in place to enable themselves to be their own supplier. They are now becoming their own manufacturer, transporter, and supplier of fuel. Financially speaking, financial gains could be achieved by selling to other bio-diesel consumers, but it was decided to stay away from the bio-fuel selling business since it was far from the core function of the company.
