The Internet is used for a number of reasons. One of the most popular uses is downloading music. File sharing has enabled people around the world to obtain music that would cost a great deal of money in stores. It also helps them download those songs that are hard to find in stores. However, the habit has not affected their desire to maintain an exclusive CD collection of their own. Many of them say that they have increased the number of CDs they buy after listening to something special on the Internet. But music companies argue that downloading popular music for free is a crime and must be punished. A worldwide decline in the sales of music CDs is their strongest argument. Artists are denied a right to their earning if songs are downloaded for free, they claim. Finally, they say, all their time, effort and money come to nothing if music piracy continues unchecked. Being able to freely download music has its advantages and disadvantages. Punishing fans of music by taking them to court would be the wrong approach, because the problem will never end. The approach will only upset fans and, in turn, hurt the music industry.
