Symptom distress in hospital
Pain
In combination with the epidural analgesia, paracetamol was
used, sometimes in combination with tramadol, and 55% of
the patients became pain free. The patients did not regard
pain as a troublesome symptom postoperatively. The median
pain score on a 0–10 scale ranged (10 = worst possible pain)
VAS scale differed between 0Æ2–1Æ7 from the day surgery was
performed to the fourth postoperative day with the lowest
measured point on the first postoperative day and the highest
point on the second day.
Oral intake
The patients were allowed to eat as soon as possible after the
operation. The number of patients with an oral intake of less
then 1000 ml is shown in Fig. 1. Postoperative nausea and
vomiting, PONV, was a troublesome symptom for about
20% of the patients during hospital stay despite the use of
antiemetic drugs (Fig. 2).
Side effects
Side effects related to the EDA occurred in 8/31 of the
patients. Numbness in the legs affected four patients. One of
these patients also suffered from insufficient tonus in the
urinary bladder in hospital and at home. Four EDA catheters
were not correctly located in the epidural space and were
removed earlier than ordinary routine. Two patients were
extremely tired in hospital with difficulties in eating, drinking
and getting out of bed. Two patients had a body temperature
of >39 C, one of them was extremely tired.
