Chest radiography is often used to diagnose CAP. Many studies use chest radiography as the preferred diagnostic modality, but positive findings have not been shown to improve clinical outcomes or significantly change treatment.17 Chest imaging is most useful when the diagnosis is uncertain or when the findings from the history and physical examination are inconsistent. Antigenic tests are available to aid in the detection of respiratory syncytial virus and influenza A and B. The Infectious Diseases Society of America recommends that all persons with fever and respiratory symptoms be tested for influenza when it is present in the community.19 The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends testing for respiratory syncytial virus only when the diagnosis is unclear.
