Plot Summary:
1. Duke Theseus is king of Athens and Creon starts a war against him.
2. Creon conquers (wins) Thebes and Theseus leaves to fight against Creon and kills him.
3. Duke Theseus captures two soldiers, Palamon and Arcite and shuts them up in a high tower.
4. One morning, Palamon sees Emily in the garden and tells Arcite he has seen the most beautiful woman.
5. Palamon says if he cannot be free and with Emily, he wants to die.
6. Arcite also feels this way about Emily and they fight over who loves Emily more.
7. Because they fight over Emily, they are longer friends
8. Duke Perotheus asks Duke Theseus to let Arcite free and Theseus agrees only if Arcite never comes back to Athens.
9. Arcite leaves Athens and continues to think of Emily. The god Mercury tells him to return to Athens and he will be happy.
10. Arcite decides to return to Athens and becomes a servant in Emily’s house.
11. While he worked in Emily’s house, Arcite changed his name to Philostrate and everybody liked him a lot (not knowing who he really was).
12. Palamon is able to escape from his tower and decides to get an army and come back to kill Theseus and win Emily.
13. While on his way, Palamon hears Arcite talking about how his love for Emily has brought him much sadness. The two men decide to fight in order to win Emily.
14. While they were fighting, Duke Theseus, Queen Hippolyta, and Emily saw them. The two men cried that they must now be killed, but Emily and the Queen would not let the Duke kill them.
15. The Duke lets Arcite and Palamon live and tells them that they will come back in one year with an army to fight to win Emily.
16. The Duke built an area for the great fight and included several temples for Venus (goddess of love), Diana (goddess of nature), and Mars (god of war).
17. Palamon prayed to Venus asking for a quick death if he did not win. Arcite prayed to Mars asking to win the battle.
18. Emily did not want to be married so she prayed to Diana and asked that if she was forced to marry to let it be to the person who loves her most, but Diana told her she must be married to one of the men.
19. In the battle, Arcite won, but as he came towards Emily, his horse was frightened and he was thrown off. He fell hard and was so hurt that he was dying. He told Emily to think of Palamon to be her husband.
20. Afterwards, Duke Theseus sent for Palamon to come to Athens and he and Emily were to be married so that Athens and Thebes could be peaceful together.
