"Karma" and "Better than winning the Premier League" are just a few of the ways a selection of vile Chelsea 'fans' have described the tragic passing of Rio Ferdinand's wife, Rebecca.
Ferdinand confirmed the news on Saturday that Rebecca, 34, who had been suffering from breast cancer, has sadly passed away, and the football world was quick to offer their condolences, including Chelsea captain John Terry, who delivered a message during his post-match Premier League title winning celebrations on Sunday.
"I would like, on behalf of myself and everyone at Chelsea, to send our condolences to Rio Ferdinand and his family."
Terry and Ferdinand were of course embroiled in a feud over Terry allegedly racially abusing Rio's brother Anton, during Chelsea's Premier League match against QPR four years ago. Ferdinand branded Terry an "idiot" for his involvement in the incident, in his autobiography '#2Sides' and it is this history between the two that has stirred up a sickening hatred in several Chelsea fans, who took to Twitter to hurl vile abuse in the direction of the mourning ex-Manchester United and England captain.
People who subject others to sexually offensive, verbally abusive or threatening material on the internet can only be prosecuted in magistrates courts under the Malicious Communications Act, which carries a maximum prison sentence of six months.
