Risk Factors
Eclampsia risk factors include nulliparity, maternal age < 18 years or > 35 years, multifetal gestation, molar pregnancy (i.e., hydatidiform mole, where the placenta develops into an abnormal mass of cysts, preventing viable pregnancy), nonimmune hydrops fetalis (i.e., buildup of abnormal amounts of fluid in ≥ two fetal/neonatal body areas), high body mass index (BMI), uncontrolled hypertension, pre-existing hypertension, diabetes mellitus (DM), renal disease, history of eclampsia in a first-degree relative, and lack of prenatal care.
