Which city in Europe has the best quality of life? A survey asked this question. For 10 years, Barcelona has been first. So what makes Barcelona one of the world’s most-visited cities? Why is it one of the best places to live? Residents and visitors talk about several aspects of everyday life. These aspects are: the friendliness of the people; the efficient public transportation system; the rich cultural heritage; and the high quality of education.
Barcelona is a favorite place for international students. It has around 20,000 foreign students. They come to Barcelona's schools, international colleges, and local universities. The city also has interesting and varied architecture. There are Roman remains and Gothic quarters. There are also modern buildings and new urban projects.
Barcelona has been an example for architecture in Europe since the 1850s. One of the most famous architects of this period is Antonio Gaudí (1852–1926). He is known for his unique creations. He designed La Pedrera house and Parc Güell. He also designed the Sagrada Familia church. This unusual church has eight towers. Each tower is over 100 meters high. It is the most-visited tourist site in Spain. It has been under construction since 1882. It will be finished in 2026.
In the old quarter, near the cathedral, there is a small square. It’s called Plaça del Rei. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain met Columbus here when he returned from the Americas. In a pretty, narrow street there is a Gothic palace. The Picasso Museum is in the palace. Picasso lived in Barcelona for many years. The museum has collections of his paintings and drawings. They are arranged chronologically.
La Rambla is nearby in the old quarter. A walk on this street is the best introduction to the city. The street is lined with trees and has many stores, flower-stands, cafés, and restaurants. The largest aquarium in Europe is at the end of the street. It is ultra-modern.
The city is also famous for its nightlife. In addition, it has beaches and is close to the mountains and forests.
Barcelona’s success is because it has the best in leisure, culture, shopping, and food. There’s always something interesting to do. Residents and visitors say, “When one is tired of Barcelona, one is tired of life.”
